Economics students earn research awards

Two SUNY Oneonta students received awards recently in the undergraduate student paper competition sponsored by the New York State Economics Association (NYSEA). Participating students from around the state submit their papers to a panel of judges and then present their research at the NYSEA Annual Meeting. This year's conference was held at St. John Fisher College in Rochester on October 6-7.

Students study tropical biology in Peru

17 SUNY Oneonta students recently traveled to Peru to study tropical biology. The group spent one week in the Andes Mountains learning about ecosystems in the highlands, as well as agricultural practices and culture. Students also learned first-hand the effects of high elevation on the human body! A highlight of their time in the mountains was the visit to the ancient Incan town of Machu Picchu, considered to be one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

The State University of New York at Potsdam will recognize nearly 900 candidates for graduation during the College's 2018 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 19. The SUNY Potsdam Class of 2018 will be awarded baccalaureate and master's degrees at the ceremony.

More than 200 Students Present at SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference

More than 200 SUNY Oneonta students were selected to present at the 2018 SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC), hosted by SUNY Oneonta on April 20. Students from 28 SUNY colleges and universities presented 179 research projects in two poster sessions, and another 100 projects in oral presentations throughout the day. Every spring, SURC brings together undergraduate researchers and faculty mentors for two daylong programs of presentations, performances, art displays and poster sessions held on two separate campuses. The second SURC event was April 21, at Monroe Community College in Rochester.

Twenty four students attain National Tutoring Association Certification

Twenty four peer tutors through SUNY Oneonta's Center for Academic Development & Enrichment have attained National Tutoring Association Level 1 Certification. In addition to being recommended as a peer tutor by a faculty member in each department for which the tutor provides tutoring, these tutors have completed at least eight hours of training and have completed at least 10 hours of supervised tutoring. Their Level 1 certification is valid for two years.

Student art featured in "Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition 2018"

Artwork by many student artists will be on display in SUNY Oneonta's Martin-Mullen Art Gallery for the "Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition 2018" in the Fine Arts Center from April 5 to May 12. A reception for the artists along with live music and food is planned for Thursday, April 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. Featured art works were chosen from an open jury process and works entered by the art faculty. Painting, drawing, sculpture, digital print, digital video, and an assortment of mixed media make up this year's offerings. All are invited to attend the reception and the exhibition.

31 Scholar Athletes Inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma

SUNY Oneonta recognized 35 student athletes by inducting them into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, during a luncheon held on April 6. To qualify for induction a student athlete must have achieved at least junior standing with a cumulative 3.4 grade point average while earning two varsity letters in an NCAA intercollegiate sport. Each student athlete must also be of good moral character and have the endorsement of his/her coach and the Chapter President.

A total of 182 students received the SUNY Oneonta 2017-2018 Susan Sutton Smith Award for academic excellence. To be eligible for the award, a student must be a freshman, sophomore or junior with a grade-point average of 3.9 or higher.

Art students capture Singapore over spring break

Eleven SUNY Oneonta art students traveled over spring break to the far-away island-country of Singapore - a contemporary art destination in Asia - to further their studies and experience new cultures. While on the faculty-led trip, the students attended lectures at LASALLE College of the Arts, visited renowned museums and photographed the city. They also tried exotic new food, enjoyed the tropical climate, and met people of diverse ethnicities, including Chinese, Malay and Indian.
