It's one thing to read about water resource problems and environmental issues in the developing world. It's an entirely different experience to see these issues - and the people they affect - first-hand and work toward solutions. Sixteen environmental sustainability students from SUNY Oneonta recently returned from a summer international field course where they did just that. In its fourth year, the field course, called "Water and Environment of Guatemala," brought students to Guatemala for two weeks, where they took water samples and analyzed water quality data from Lake Atitlan and the surrounding drainage basin. The course is led by Associate Professor of Geography and Environmental Sciences Tracy Allen. Based on their observations, interactions with local residents, and data collection, students worked to identify sustainable solutions to the area's water resources problems. Students were also able to learn about agriculture while touring a coffee plantation and, later, take in the area's natural wonders, including the Pacaya volcano, which is active. The students went into a Guatemalan elementary school to teach fifth and sixth graders about the lake and water quality, and they also installed water filtration systems into some of the area homes. Students said these interactions were particularly meaningful and rewarding, and the trip was eye-opening.

The following students were named to the Dean's List at Paul Smith's College during the spring 2017 semester. Each earned a semester average of 3.3 or higher to receive this distinction.

The following students graduated from Paul Smith's College on May 6, 2017.

Morrisville State College recently announced the students who were named to the Dean's List for the Spring 2017 semester. To be named to the Dean's List, a student must achieve an average of 3.0 to 3.99 for the semester and complete 12 credit hours.

Albright College held its 158th Commencement ceremony on May 21, 2017. Diplomas were awarded to traditional, Accelerated Degree Programs and master's degree students.

Students have been named to the Dean's List for the spring 2017 semester at Clarkson University.

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 305 students who excelled academically in the Spring 2017 semester to the College's Dean's List.

Students have been named Presidential Scholars for the spring 2017 semester at Clarkson University.

Clarkson University awarded more than 700 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees to students from 34 states, 26 countries and 60 New York state counties at its 124th commencement on May 13, 2017. (An additional 262 students received degrees this past winter and summer.)

A total of 187 SUNY Oneonta students earned Provost's List honors for the spring 2016 semester. To qualify for the Provost's List, a student must earn a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while carrying a course load of 12 hours or more. A total of 1,409 SUNY Oneonta students earned Dean's List honors for the spring 2017 semester. To qualify for the Dean's List, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while carrying a course load of 12 hours or more.

Local athletes competed on the 2016-17 SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team.

SUNY Oneonta recognized 54 outstanding students during an Academic Achievement Awards reception on May 3. One to three students were chosen from each of the college's academic departments and programs to receive the 2017 Academic Achievement Awards. Each student selected one faculty guest to accompany them to the recognition event. In addition to their excellent work in the classroom, students were honored for distinguishing themselves in many ways, including research, activism, mentoring, athletics, involvement in campus activities and volunteerism.

Nearly 140 SUNY Oneonta students presented original research and creative projects at the college's 2017 Student Research and Creative Activity Day on April 12.

Over 30 Ithaca College students were inducted into the Tau Sigma National Honor Society, an academic honor society designed specifically to "recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students."

A total of 192 students received the SUNY Oneonta 2016-2017 Susan Sutton Smith Award for academic excellence. To be eligible for the award, a student must be a freshman, sophomore or junior with a grade-point average of 3.9 or higher. Student award winners receive a certificate, a gift card to the campus bookstore, and an invitation to attend the annual Susan Sutton Smith Lecture and reception. Dr. Florian Reyda, professor of biology, will deliver this year's Susan Smith Lecture titled, "Parasites, Evolution and Us," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in the Otsego Grille of the Morris Conference Center on campus.

SUNY Oneonta recognized 35 student athletes by inducting them into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, during a luncheon held on April 6. To qualify for induction a student athlete must have achieved at least junior standing with a cumulative 3.4 grade point average while earning a varsity letter in an NCAA intercollegiate sport. Each student athlete must also be of good moral character and have the endorsement of his/her coach and the Chapter President.

More than 280 Albright College students were named to the Dean's List for academic achievement for the 2016 fall semester.

Students have been named to the Dean's List for the fall 2016 semester at Clarkson University.

More than 300 students met requirements for graduation from SUNY Oneonta following the Fall 2016 semester. Graduates were honored at a December recognition ceremony hosted by College President Nancy Kleniewski and held in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House. They also are eligible to participate in the college's commencement on May 13.
